Chinese College Student Seeks to 'Rent' Girlfriend for Holidays

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

BEIJING — A desperate Chinese university student wants to "rent" a girlfriend for 10 days so he can show her off to his parents over the Lunar New Year holiday, state media reported Wednesday.
The physics student, who gave his name as Zhu Lijie, posted a notice on a bulletin board at Peking University offering 1,000 yuan (US$130) to a woman who would pose as his girlfriend for the trip home for the holiday, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The advertisement said the woman should be "an honest, kind and similar-aged girl with a diploma."
The Lunar New Year holiday, which starts Feb. 18 this year, is the most important family holiday in China.
Xinhua said Zhu had told his parents, who were pressuring him to get a girlfriend, that he had been studying too hard and had no time to meet a potential partner.
Peking University officials and the police have warned women to be wary of such advertisements.
Wang Jisheng, a professor with the Psychology Institution of the Chinese Academy Sciences, was quoted as saying Zhu was trying to show filial piety to his parents but was only cheating them.

This day in History

1972 - In Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 13 unarmed civil rights demonstrators were shot dead by British Army paratroopers, a day later known as "Bloody Sunday."
This is the event that latter would have a song written about it and performed my Irish rock band U2.

I love these, they so so sugary and gross but for some reason I like them.

This little mouse (at the bottom of the "gravestone") got into one of our lightswitch boxes at work. Needless to say, the little bugger didn't survive and someone put a cutout that looks like a gravestone over his remains. RIP little guy.

A letdown

I felt violated last night when I discovered that the song "Life is a Highway" was done by Rascal Flatts, a country group.Needless to say, I no longer feel the same about the song and the group for sneaking onto the radio waves of my rock station.

Murphy's Law of the Open Road:
When there is a very long road upon which there is a one-way bridge placed at random, and there are only two cars on that road, it follows that:
(1) the two cars are going in opposite directions, and (2) they will always meet at the bridge.

"I haven't had a drink in seven days. Or anything," she said to People. "I'm not even legal to, so why would I? I don't drink when I go to clubs. I drink with my friends at home, but there's no need to. I feel better not drinking. It's more fun. I have Red Bull."

This weekend

Once again, there will be a showdown between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts for AFC title and the right to play the NFC in the Superbowl.
The Patriots won in a rather common way,a fieldgoal with little time on the clock and the Chargers missed their fieldgoal attempt which ended their season and allowed the Pats to make their 4th AFC Championship game in 6 years.

How this weekend will stack up...... from a Patriot fan's perspective....

Offense- I have to give this one to the Colts, between Addia and Manning they should be able to pull off a couple good drives.

defense-This one is definintly going with the Patriots despite the fact that the Colts defense has shown up in their last two games, the Pat's has been there most all season.

Coaching- Belicheck knows what he is doing.

Intangibles- Patriots of course.

Outcome- Patriots will take it, they will put pressure on Manning that will disrupt the Colt's offensive rhythm and on offence, Brady will spread the defense out and find ways to get a couple touchdowns.
My prediction, a low scoring game.
